As a company rooted in conservation and ethical travel, we believe a journey through Africa is a rare chance to connect with some of the planet’s most extraordinary landscapes and wildlife. With this comes the opportunity to travel in a meaningful way that also gives back. Here are some simple ways to make your trip more sustainable.
Choose Eco-Conscious Camps and Lodges
Where you stay matters. We partner with properties that go beyond “greenwashing” and instead make real efforts to minimize their environmental impact. These camps are often powered by renewable energy, use innovative waste and water recycling systems, and support anti-poaching efforts and habitat restoration. They also have strong relationships with local communities, ensuring that your travel dollars contribute directly to local livelihoods and conservation.
Travel During Shoulder or Green Season
Traveling outside of peak safari season not only reduces pressure on the environment and local communities but also creates a quieter, more intimate wildlife experience. During green season, landscapes are lush, birding is phenomenal, and you’ll often have sightings all to yourself. It’s a way to reduce your footprint and enjoy a more exclusive adventure, while supporting local economies during quieter months. And yes, the wildlife is still amazing!
Support Community-Led Initiatives
We work with operators and lodges that empower and employ people predominantly from nearby communities. This includes skills training, education programs, and sustainable enterprise development. You can give back by purchasing local crafts, joining cultural experiences led by community members, or contributing to vetted conservation and social projects. We’re happy to match your interests with opportunities that have real impact.
Fly Smart and Pack Light
Did you know that choosing flights with fewer connections can help lower your carbon footprint? Take-off and landing are the most fuel-intensive parts of air travel, so avoiding multiple layovers, when possible, makes a big difference. Another simple but powerful step: pack lighter. The heavier an aircraft, the more fuel it consumes. Cargo and baggage make up a significant portion of an aircraft’s weight, so bringing less really helps. In fact, if every traveler packed just one less pair of shoes (around 2 lbs), the resulting fuel savings would be equivalent to removing 10,500 cars from the road for an entire year. More information about offsetting your carbon footprint can be found here.
Be a Respectful Guest
Whether you’re photographing wildlife, meeting tribal elders, or hiking through a forest, your mindset matters. Follow your guide’s instructions, stay on designated paths, and approach all experiences with humility and curiosity. Respecting local customs, wildlife, and the natural rhythm of the land is a powerful form of sustainability.
At the heart of it all, sustainable travel is about connection—with people, wildlife, and place. We believe that by traveling responsibly, your journey can become part of the solution—not just for Africa’s wild spaces, but for the global future we all share.
