Reteti’s Elephant Release Day!

The community-owned and run Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in northern Kenya achieved a significant, yet emotional, milestone in June, with the release of 13 orphaned elephant calves back into the wild. Ground monitoring teams will now keep an eye on the elephants to ensure their wellbeing as they start their new lives. Reteti, founded in 2016, is the first sanctuary owned and run by members of the local Samburu community, which rescues orphaned and abandoned baby elephants and rehabilitates them for “rewilding”. The sanctuary is hosted by the Namunyak Community Conservancy, a pristine wilderness encompassing more than 850,000 acres.

The symbolism of the day’s events cannot be overstated. It represents the commitment of a community standing united behind the elephants with whom they’ve shared generations of coexistence – and a landscape representing their hopes for the future as well as the memories they hold dear. This release celebrates the success of a community that never gave up on its natural legacy and continues to work tirelessly to keep its wilderness flourishing and thriving for generations to come! We honor these elephants and their brave journeys of healing, as well as the people keeping them safe and bringing them home!
