ZANZIBARZanzibar is a slumbering paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice, cinnamon and coconuts grow. Otherwise known as the Spice Island, it has lured travelers to its shores for centuries, some in search of trade, some in search of plunder and others in search of an idyllic home. The Sumerians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Portuguese, Omani Arabs and Sultans, Dutch and English have been all here at one time or other. This beautiful Indian Ocean island is part of an archipelago which lies approximately 20 miles off the coast of mainland Tanzania. Zanzibar history is fascinating – the mix of influences is evident in the colorful architecture and alleyways of historic Stonetown and the ruined towns and palaces across the island. Stonetown's magnificent doors – some over 150 years old – showcase its Persian and Indian heritage. Once a very important slave trade hub, slaves were traded from here to markets in India, Arabia and Europe. Today, you will see a mix of cultures here unlike any other in Africa. The beaches are magnificent, from the beautiful Mnemba Island at the far north eastern tip of Zanzibar to the southern coast – all providing extensive reefs, miles of white sand beaches and opportunities to sail the Indian Ocean on a traditional dhow through turquoise waters teeming with marine life. Whether it’s a spice plantation tour, a snorkeling or diving trip on a dhow, sipping a cocktail on the terrace of the historic Zanzibar Serena Inn in Stonetown, your first encounter with a Kirk's red colobus monkey in the Jozani forest, or simply lazing the day away under a palm tree …. Your Zanzibar experience will provide a wonderful contrast to your African safari.
