NAMIBIA - Mowani Mountain Camp - Twyfelfontein Conservancy, Damaraland

Mowani Mountain Camp can be found between the Ugab and the Huab Rivers, in the heart of southern Damaraland. Built on a rocky outcrop, nestled among huge granite boulders, the camp has sweeping views over the gravel plains and mountains beyond.

ACCOMMODATION:

Mowani's main dining and lounge area are housed under two large, adjoining dome thatched rondavels and invite guests to relax and socialize. A small swimming pool and deck are built between the rocks below the main area.

Mowani Camp has 12 individually designed luxury tented rooms. All have en-suite facilities and a private verandah.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE:

Mowani offers guided activities, which include nature drives to track the desert-adapted elephants and view the sparse but interesting wildlife that survives in this arid environment, guided nature walks and excursions to the nearby famous rock art at Twyfelfontien.

Twyfelfontein is a rocky site containing around 2,000 ancient rock carvings. In 2007 UNESCO declared Twyfelfontein a World Heritage Site. The objects excavated from two sections date from the Late Stone Age. The site forms an extensive record of ritual practices relating to hunter-gatherer communities. All the rock engravings and rock paintings within the core area are the authentic work of San hunter-gatherers who lived in the region long before the influx of Damara herders and European colonists.

Visitors who arrive in their own vehicles are free to use Mowani as a base for their own explorations, or join the camp's optional trips. There is also a camping site nearby.
