Immerse yourself in the rich culture and unique history of this diverse and beautiful country. Visit the city of Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa, headquarters of the African Union and home to over 100 embassies. Visit the National Museum where the 3.5 million-year-old bones of Lucy lie. Visit Bahir Dar and embark on a cruise of Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile… also visit the Blue Nile Falls. Onward to Gondar, the ancient capital of Ethiopia, known as the Camelot of Africa for its medieval castles and churches. We will take excursions to the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia’s most popular hiking destination hosting the fourth highest mountain in Africa. Travel to Lalibela, the “Jerusalem of Africa”, home of the fascinating rock-hewn churches from the 12th century. Finally, visit Axum, the land of the Queen of Sheba and the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. From Axum, return to Addis Ababa to end your adventure with a local dinner and coffee ceremony.

Day 1

Addis Ababa

Location(s):

On your first day in Addis, take a city tour, visiting the National Museum where the 3.5 million-year-old bones of Lucy lie, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and enjoy a panoramic view of the capital from the Entoto Hills.

Day 2, 3

Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

Location(s):

Depart this morning and enjoy a boat trip on Lake Tana. This boat ride visits the 14th century Monastery of Ura Kidane Mehret, one of the most famous monasteries of the area with some beautiful painted maqdas and a priceless collection of crosses and crowns. After the boat ride, drive to the village of Isat to view the nearby Blue Nile Falls.

Day 4

Gondar

Location(s):

Visit Gondar, the ancient capital of Ethiopia, known as the Camelot of Africa for its medieval castles and churches.  Surrounded by a 900-m-long wall, the city contains palaces, churches, monasteries and unique public and private buildings marked by Hindu and Arab influences, subsequently transformed by the Baroque style brought to Gondar by the Jesuit missionaries.

Day 5

Simien Mountains

Location(s):

Excursion to the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia’s most popular hiking destination hosting the fourth highest mountain in Africa. Hike amongst the natural habitat of the gelada monkey, who are so friendly that they allow for a very close experience! Enjoy a traditional picnic lunch in the mountains, before returning back to the point of departure.

Day 6

Axum

Location(s):

Visit Axum, the land of the Queen of Sheba and the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.

Day 7

Lalibela

Location(s):

Visit Lalibela, the “Jerusalem of Africa”, home of the fascinating rock-hewn churches from the 12th century.  Known by many as the “eighth wonder of the world”, these remarkable structures were carved out of a solid rock, in a region where the ragged landscape still protects the churches from mass tourism.

Day 8

Departure Day

Location(s):

Return to Addis in the evening for a traditional dinner and coffee ceremony, before being returned to the airport for your outbound flights.
