"OKAVANGO'S PLACE OF PLENTY"
Hidden in the heart of the Delta, off the north-western tip of Chiefs Island lies a camp that is unrivalled in Africa - Mombo! We have yet to have a client stay at Mombo who has not returned filled with awe and wonder at this wildlife paradise.
Mombo and Little Mombo are premier luxury camps, owned and operated by Wilderness Safaris and are in a low intensity area offering little intrusion and a sense of privacy and closeness to the wilderness found in very few other places in Africa.
ACCOMMODATION:
Mombo was designed by architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens with the aim of providing guests absolute luxury whilst also maintaining an atmosphere of Africa’s finest classic tented safari camps. Their design brief stated that the feel was to be elegant, restrained, understated, colonial, real, timeless and enduring. The result is all this and more ……
Mombo is comprised of two camps – Mombo has 9 rooms and Little Mombo has 3 rooms. Little Mombo is connected to Mombo by the same raised walkways that connect all the rooms. The rooms at both camps are exactly the same.
Mombo and Little Mombo were voted the Number 1 Resort in Africa in the 2009 Condé Nast Traveler (USA) Readers' Choice Awards. Both camps achieved a ranking of 97.1 which also placed them at the number 10 slot on the Top 100 list as well - a list described by the magazine as "...the hotels, resorts and cruise lines that achieved near perfection!
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE:
The best big game viewing experience starts on the veranda at Mombo Camp, with unbelievable concentrations of game occurring right in front of the camp. Guests often find animals wandering past, right under their rooms!
Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles take guests deep into the floodplains and savannahs where large concentrations of wildlife and birds abound. There are 2 hides - one at the Hippo Pools and the other to the west of camp on a nearby island – providing exceptional big game and bird sightings.
As a year-round, exclusive wildlife destination (especially for predators), Mombo has a record unequalled in Africa. This area provides one of the highest quality wildlife viewing opportunities on earth. Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and all the major predators are common in the region. The excellent game at Mombo has made this area Botswana's top wildlife documentary location. National Geographic, the BBC and many others have filmed here. Birdlife is prolific too!

Rhino Re-introduction Program: Early in 2002, Wilderness Safaris in conjunction with Botswana's Department of Wildlife and National Parks began the process of reintroducing White Rhinos in the Moremi Game Reserve on Chiefs Island at Mombo camp. In late 2001 there were no wild rhino left in Botswana. Beginning with five white rhinos that were originally released, there are now over 40.
