BOTSWANA - Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta

Jacana Camp is a true Okavango Delta water camp, located on an island wonderland in a region with amazing wildlife and teeming with birds.

Explorations by mokoro are a highlight here and offered year round. The camp is situated in the private Jao Concession on the Moremi Game Reserve boundary in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. It is a classic Wilderness Safaris camp.

ACCOMMODATION:

Jacana Camp consists of five Meru-style tents built on raised wooden decks with great views over the Delta. Each tent has an enclosed en-suite bathroom with a roofless shower. The main dining area is on an elevated platform between two sycamore fig trees and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Jacana Camp also has a cosy drinks and lounge with an area for an open fire under the stars and a plunge pool for cooling off in the heat of the day.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE:

Activities at Jacana Camp include mokoro trips year round. Walking safaris (must be requested prior to travel) and game drives are usually available during the months when the floodwaters have receded (October to April). There are also two platform hides within the Jao Concession.

Jacana Camp is set in one of the most densely populated wetland areas for sitatunga and red lechwe. All the big animals can be found here too, including elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. Wildlife concentrations depend on the water flow and volume of water in the Delta. The birdlife here is quite astonishing – one will usually spot Pel's Fishing-Owl, African and Lesser Jacanas, Slaty Egret, African Pygmy-Goose and Western Banded Snake-Eagle.

Jacana Camp is actively involved in the Jao Lion Monitoring Project which was started shortly after the inception of the Jao Concession. Jao Concession holder, David Kays, is a member of the Tubu Joint Management Committee. The aim of the Committee is to reduce conflict between the community and the Jao Concession - specifically with regard to curbing poaching and over-fishing.
