This camp is located in the Mombo Concession, part of the renowned Moremi Game Reserve. The island was named after Chief Moremi, the hereditary king of the area who used the lands as his royal hunting grounds. It was Moremi's people, the Tawana, who turned it into this game-rich reserve where the animals are protected.
ACCOMMODATION:
There are 12 luxury rooms or "pavilions", built in the shade of a jackalberry and sausage tree woodland. All rooms have private decks, outdoor showers and full en-suite facilities. There is a communal living room and dining area surrounding a fire pit.
Activities here include very productive game viewing on morning and afternoon/evening drives. The night driving reveals many nocturnal creatures including leopard, genets and bush babies. Lion, leopard, cheetah, crocodile and elephant are usually seen during a 3 night stay. Wild dog have also been seen and hyena are found here in abundance. Walks with an armed guide are a great way to get up close to the environment, learning the tracking skills and getting to know the incredible natural heritage of the unique Delta system.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE:
Mokoro trips are a highlight here too – gliding peacefully through the channels of the Delta with an expert local poler is a must. These excursions are subject to the water levels of the Delta. Each June the area around the camp floods and turns the Okavango Delta into a labyrinth of lily-filled lagoons and streams - ideal conditions for hippos and crocodiles. Mokoros are still used in the Delta by the ‘river bushmen’ or BaYei people. This activity is subject to water levels. Motorised speedboats are also used when the rivers are in flood.
Sanctuary Chief’s offers a range of spa treatments using products from the Africology line. Guests are able to choose from a range of body therapies, body rituals and facial skin care treatments.
OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES (must be booked prior to arrival at additional cost):
Helicopter flights over the Delta -These scenic flights involve flying west of the game drive routes towards the permanent delta, exposing guests to areas which are unreachable by vehicle or boat. Guests have the option of the doors being removed for unrestricted photographic opportunities. This is done with the utmost consideration to guest safety. Guests are offered a 30, 45 or 60 minute scenic tour of the Okavango Delta in a one turbine Bell Jetranger helicopter with 4 seats which is offered on a year round basis. Guests have the choice of when to do the activity - early morning and late afternoon usually provide the best light for photography.
